Nigel Bavidge

NIGEL Bavidge, who has died aged 65, was a national director of the Rainbows organisation which helps children and young people deal with a bereavement or divorce

The author of devotional articles and books, Nigel was a married teacher who became a Roman Catholic deacon at the Good Shepherd Church in Mytholmroyd.

He taught religious education at Halifax Catholic High School from 1972 to 1980 before lecturing at Trinity and All Saints College, Leeds.

From 1987, he became part of the Leeds diocesan religious education team and in 1996 was ordained as a deacon at the Good Shepherd Church.

Nigel was diagnosed with cancer eight months ago, but maintained an active lifestyle as a deep-sea diver and in his roles as deacon and chaplain at the Augustinian School in Carlisle, and as guide, counsellor and good friend to many.

He is survived by his wife, Liz, and their son Fin, and daughter Gabrielle.
