The institution was set up in 2002 and has trained and inspired a number of young men on the Sea Fishing Apprenticeship, enabling them to join the UK fleet to supplement crews as their older members retired from fishing.

Mr Hornigold, a lecturer by profession, had been its director of training towards the end of a working life that had also taken in spells as a Coastguard officer at Whitby and, in earlier years, a volunteer with the RNLI inshore lifeboat.
