Celebrating our showbiz stars on Yorkshire Day – The Yorkshire Post says

Can you hear me, mother? Not many of us remember hearing the toothsome Rotherham comic Sandy Powell utter the words that became his catchphrase in the 1930s, yet the phrase resonates even today. That’s the power of broadcasting.

Powell was one of a new generation of radio performers who realised that on this most intimate medium, just five words could make you a star. Yet there were others from the Ridings who mastered the microphone even earlier, and our album of celebrity portraits, published with today’s newspaper, is a timely reminder of just how many great names have hailed from Yorkshire.

Some are famous still; others forgotten. But the breadth of their talent is as diverse as the county itself and all of them have, in their own way, helped communicate its distinctive character far beyond the Broad Acres.
