A chance for Ripon Cathedral to herald new era – The Yorkshire Post says

THE magnificent Ripon Cathedral isn’t just one of the county’s great places of worship; it is also the parish church of the Dales and a focal point for civic events.

Yet, while it is rightly proud of its history, it also needs to adapt to ensure that it meets the needs of worshippers and parishoners in the 21st century. As such, the plan for a new cafe, shop and education space is the coronerstone of a £6m plan which will pave the way for the Cathedral to play an even greater role in community life – the proposals, for example, include a new rehearsal space for Ripon Choir.

And while it is important that these adaptations do not detract from the splendour of a building which can be traced back to the mid-seventh century when St Wilfrid, then abbot of the monastery at Ripon, took the bold step of building a stone basilica with a crypt, the Cathedral – like the Church of England – has to move with the times in order to remain as relevant as ever.
