The call by Health Secretary Matt Hancock for Premier League players to “take a pay cut and play their part” as the coronavirus pandemic took hold in the UK sparked backlash from names such as Gary Neville, Wayne Rooney and Gary Lineker amid claims that politicians were making footballers “scapegoats” of the crisis.

As well as taking part in the #PlayersTogether project to help generate funds for the NHS, players at several clubs have been reaching out to vulnerable and isolated fans. In one exemplary act this week, England captain Harry Kane video called ex-footballer Colin Grainger to check in on the octogenarian, who lives in Kirklees.
