Let there be light

IT'S not just public expenditure where Scotland enjoys special status. Even though it has its own devolved parliament, its views continue to take precedence in the long-running debate about British Summer Time – and whether the clocks should be put back every autumn. The consequence is that England is plunged into darkness by mid-afternoon.

East Yorkshire MP Greg Knight, however, has offered a sensible solution. Why not give Scotland its "own time zone" rather than forcing the rest of the UK to change their clocks twice a year?

He argues that the impasse is probably caused by a disproportionate number of people in Scotland advocating the status quo. Mr Knight's pro-active proposal is certainly worth exploring further, especially if it means time being called on this long-running debate.
