IT IS now accepted that the best gift of all this Christmas is families using their common sense, as so many are doing here, to minimise the spread of Covid.

Next, however, is individuals vowing to take affirmative action to tackle the scourge of litter which, sadly and predictably, is reaching epidemic levels according to the CPRE countryside charity due to discarded PPE.

At the end of a difficult and, invariably, traumatic year, one of the highlights has been this county’s famed community spirit – and the extent to which neighbours continue to support the less fortunate.

Yet there’s no need for people to treat Britain’s most beautiful county as a personal rubbish tip while politicians dither over what to do.

Just think of the difference that could be made overnight if every person vowed to pick up an item of litter on their festive walk and disposed of it responsibly – it might even shame the more thoughtless into mending their ways before any law gets changed.
