Yet, with just 15 days to go until Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s Budget, it is even more important, and urgent, that he explains how he expects the North to play its full part in the UK’s national resurgence.

And it is why The Yorkshire Post, just as it has done in recent days, will continue to use forthcoming editions to highlight the importance of the Richmond MP’s defining speech to the region’s future fortunes.

Unlike the past, Yorkshire and the North is brimming with ideas from the call-to-arms by Anne Longfield, the outgoing Children’s Commissioner, over education to ideas by Jake Berry, the former Northern Powerhouse Minister, to incentivise investment here and a new report today looking at how best to boost competition.

Even though they all have different starting point, there is one constant theme – a need for the Government to invest in the 15 million people who work and live in the North, and to view each and every person as an investment in the future.

What is still opaque is how the Government can advance the Northern Powerhouse agenda, the original ‘levelling up’ mission, when its plans remain so ad hoc. Pressing before Covid struck, this agenda is now even more paramount and now is the chance for Mr Sunak to address this imbalance in power, and priorities, before so-called ‘red wall’ voters conclude that they were hoodwinked at the last election.
