Snow-covered Ribblehead Viaduct remains feat of engineering – The Yorkshire Post says

THE Ribblehead Viaduct – one of the defining symbols of Yorkshire heritage – is even more imposing when shrouded by a light covering of snow.

It is testament to the craftsmanship of the 2,300 labourers who were involved in the construction of this imposing stretch of railway on the iconic Settle to Carlisle line.

Their work was so precarious that over 100 men perished before the line was opened in 1876 and started carrying its first trains.

Yet maintenance of the viaduct is not for the faint-hearted – as exemplified by photographer Charlotte Graham’s pictures of scaffolding, and climbing equipment, being used by workmen to carry out repairs to John Sydney Crossley’s masterpiece.

Though the view from the top might be the best – and coldest – on the rail network, it is a powerful pictorial reminder about the important role that engineers play in maintaining such routes for public use.
