Vaccines and injection of public confidence – The Yorkshire Post says

THERE has been a subtle shift in the country’s outlook as the Covid vaccination programme is accelerated – the initial cynicism has been replaced by a growing confidence in the arrangements as the number of people given their first jab surpasses four million and recount their positive experiences.

Of course credit goes to all those teams on the ground who have responded so adeptly – the 10 new vaccine sites include the Askham Bar park and ride facility on York’s outskirts. But it’s also timely to acknowledge the leadership of Nadhim Zahawi, the Vaccines Minister, Emily Lawson, his senior strategist, and others whose assuredness has seen such rapid programme since Margaret Keenan made history on December 8 by becoming the first person in the world to be vaccinated from Covid.

Since the initial hesitancy over whether two doses of the Pfizer vaccine had to be given to patients within three weeks, the communication has been clear – the latest edict says the over-80s must still take precedence as the rollout is extended. It has been embraced by the vaccine teams. And there’s a desire to listen to constructive suggestions like this newspaper’s campaign for local pharmacies play a more prominent role.

Inevitably, more challenges will follow. But how refreshing for a public servant of Ms Lawson’s stature to respond to the pharmacy campaign by saying: “We’d expect nothing less from The Yorkshire Post! Tell it like it is. We’ll keep incorporating the feedback.” After all, this is not about taking sides – it is about pulling together in a team effort to overcome Covid before more lives, and livelihoods, are lost.
