IT is both paradoxical and perverse that the weather is set fair on the one Bank Holiday weekend when the country is in lockdown.

These are already agonising times for tourism which is worth up to £9bn a year to Yorkshire’s economy.

But, as the much-respected Yorkshire consultant and campaigner Susan Briggs wrote on these pages a fortnight ago, it’s also an opportunity to prepare now for the time when the county, countryside and coast is open for business.

Encouragingly, Welcome to Yorkshire now appears up for the challenge. This week’s appointments of the Piece Hall’s Nicky Chance-Thompson and Castle Howard’s Abbi Ollive to the board of directors point to an organisation that is more inclusive and open to new thinking.

And the involvement of the owners of visitor attractions suggests that WTY’s new leadership does, in fact, value grassroots tourism – and how this sector now needs to be championed, and cherished, in its very own hour of survival.

Editor’s note: first and foremost - and rarely have I written down these words with more sincerity - I hope this finds you well.

Almost certainly you are here because you value the quality and the integrity of the journalism produced by The Yorkshire Post’s journalists - almost all of which live alongside you in Yorkshire, spending the wages they earn with Yorkshire businesses - who last year took this title to the industry watchdog’s Most Trusted Newspaper in Britain accolade.
