York Station’s historic opportunity for revamp – The Yorkshire Post says

FIRST impressions count – and plans to redevelop the entrance to York Station are a chance to create a new gateway that reflects its status as one of the great railway destinations.

Yet, while City of York Council will have to take account of the station’s heritage and history when it considers this long-awaited planning application tomorrow, one factor needs to take precedence.

That is the need to make the entrance, and surrounding area, more spacious for passengers and visitors so that it is possible to maintain social distancing – and other health measures – when current restrictions are lifted and tourists begin to return to York.

Now, more than ever, is the time to future-proof the region’s infrastructure, including stations and trains, so that Britain is better placed to manage and control future outbreaks of Covid, or any other pandemic, without having to shut the entire country down. That’s the new challenge of these times.
