Yorkshire Post Says: Royal support helping mental health issue

MENTAL health problems are among the most prevalent yet least recognised of all illnesses in our society, which makes the efforts of younger members of the Royal Family to highlight them especially praiseworthy and important.

The advocacy of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Harry, for greater recognition and better treatment has given the issue the high profile it deserves, not least because of the moving testimony of the two princes of their own struggles to come to terms with the death of their mother, Princess Diana.

If such advocacy is vital in raising the profile of mental health problems, so are practical measures, and the investment of £2m by the foundation set up by the Royals is another welcome step in signposting help for those in need of it.

The intervention of the Royals has already proved its worth, with mental health services reporting a substantial increase in the number of people contacting helplines.

This paints a picture of people who have hitherto felt isolated and unsure of where to turn becoming aware that they are not alone in their struggles
and realising that help is available.

Such an outcome is much to be welcomed, and it is to be hoped that the new investment enables
many more people to receive help.

William, Kate and Harry are passionate about their commitment to improving the treatment of mental health problems. It is an issue richly deserving of their support, and one which everyone concerned with society’s welfare should also back.
