YP Letters: Appeasing Daesh will leave us vulnerable

Despite opposing the Iraq war, Paris has not been immune from terrorist attacks.

IN his letter (The Yorkshire Post, December 9), Martin Cruttwell seems to suggest that we should try to appease the Daesh (Islamic State) terrorists by not joining the international campaign, in the hope that they will then leave us alone, and that it is partly our fault that there is a problem anyway, because of our roles in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This is however a naïve assumption. The French took no part in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and in fact argued against it, but they weren’t spared from Daesh blaming their decadent western culture.

The latter could hardly be claimed for Turkey and the Lebanon, but they too were attacked.

The opponents also refer to the situation as bombing Syria, or going to war, but  this is misleading as all that  is planned is extending the targeted attacks on Daesh infrastructure, which we are already carrying out in Iraq, across the border into Syria, a border that Daesh do not even recognise.

Most experts do however agree that this might increase  the risks of terrorist attacks in the UK in the short term, but should this be a valid reason for not joining in our partners’ attempts to wipe out this evil organisation?
