Airport testing can help jumpstart international travel - Yorkshire Post Letters

EFFECTIVE airport testing has a vital role to play in jumpstarting international travel and trade, so the Government’s Global Travel Taskforce announcement will be welcomed by business in Yorkshire and the Humber.

As global trade picks up, Britain must be at the forefront. A successful testing system will help air passengers travel confidently and conveniently from Leeds Bradford and Doncaster Sheffield airports, and underscore the UK’s status as a hub for international connectivity.

The UK economy is fuelled by international travel for access to tourists, trade and talent. Firms will be watching this taskforce and the Government’s subsequent decisions on testing closely.

BORIS Johnson may well be struggling to remember his “new friends in the North”, but if Jayne Dowle sees a decade of austerity as why Northern communities are struggling, she is blinkered (The Yorkshire Post, October 8).

The North was left behind by the South, driven by financial services and media, several decades ago as old industries and jobs vanished here.

Perhaps only two cities, Leeds and Manchester, have the muscle to compete for new, high-value jobs; the rest are left to wave the begging bowl, none more woefully than my rudderless hometown.
