Appoint our police on merit, not ethnicity – Yorkshire Post Letters

I FIND it alarming that the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire wants to use a candidates race as part of the selection criteria for new recruits (The Yorkshire Post, July 21).

It seems to me the police are desperately in need of the highest-quality recruits they can find – regardless of their background – not to mention the unfairness of good candidates being rejected on the grounds of their race.

Should the police look to become more diverse?Should the police look to become more diverse?
Should the police look to become more diverse?

IS it only me that feels alarmed
at the proposal by Chief Constable John Robins to introduce positive discrimination in order to get more BAME police officers recruited into the West
Yorkshire force?

Surely we only want the best people for the job in whatever field and whatever their race, colour or creed?

From: Jarvis Browning, Fadmoor, York.

WOULD it not be better for the police to go back to the traditional hard police hats which they used to wear, rather than the soft caps they have now?

Would that lessen their risk of head injuries?

Editor’s note: first and foremost - and rarely have I written down these words with more sincerity - I hope this finds you well.
