Boris Johnson’s lockdown caution is step in right direction – Yorkshire Post Letters

From: Peter Hyde, Driffield.

FOR once, I have to agree with the way our Prime Minister is dealing with the relaxation of the current lockdown (The Yorkshire Post, February 23).

If he listened to those who are demanding faster easing, we would soon be back to square one with yet another spike in infections and yet another set of restrictions. The real problem lies with those who cannot bring themselves to obey the rules and have illegal parties or meetings that cancel the good the rest of us achieve. A step at a time is the way to go, and to be ready to take a step back if required.

From: The Rt Rev Dr John Thomson, Bishop of Selby.

AS someone who has recently received my first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, may I say how impressed I was by the efficiency and courtesy of those staffing the vaccine centre at Selby Leisure Centre (The Summit) and express my thanks to them and to all who have been involved in the vaccine production and rollout. I would also like to commend the Christian Aid Give Thanks for your Vaccination campaign to raise money for the poorest and most vulnerable communities across the world where there is little hope of a vaccine rollout.

COULD I just refer to a comment from Gary Stainthorpe (The Yorkshire Post, February 22) when he asks why the UK has the highest Covid death rate in Europe?

I am no ‘expert’ (we are treated to a new and varied bunch every day) but I do see that the UK has the highest population density per sq km than almost any other country in the world never mind Europe. Just a few examples – UK 279.95 per sq km, Germany 232.80, Italy 199.97, France 123.28 and Spain 92.76.

I am not knocking New Zealand – we were there when both they and the UK closed down last year and they have done a great a job but their density rate is 19.0. Statistics are great, but using selective data is not representative and even unfair.

BORIS Johnson’s “slow march to freedom” statement lifting Covid-19 restrictions in part defies logic.

From March 8 it’s okay for two people from different households to meet in a park, sit on a bench, enjoy a coffee, breathing in fresh air. Yet, it is illegal for the same two persons each carrying a set of golf clubs to meet on a golf course, engage in exercise, breathe in the same fresh air, constantly more than two metres apart.
