Cameron should hold fire over ‘Islamic State’

From: Dr Glyn Powell, Kellington, Goole.

DAVID Cameron’s dithering over how to respond to the threat posed by ‘Islamic State’ jihadists is typical. However, he can dither for as long as he likes as we should not return to the Middle East in a combat role.

Britain’s record in resolving matters in this region has historically not been great. In Iraq, thousands died with the country ruined and divided as a consequence of western intervention. The long term outcome is the rise of ‘Islamic State’. In Libya, western military action removed Colonel Gaddafi’s stable government, resulting in chaos and a civil war. Therefore, the region should be left to sort out its own disagreements and problems.

I WRITE in support of your Editorial calling on Muslim leaders to totally disassociate their communities from the actions of militants of their faith, as exemplified by the brutal beheadings of humanitarian workers such as David Haines (The Yorkshire Post, September 15).

Had such acts been committed by members of the Christian community, ex-communication would surely have followed. Muslim leaders worldwide should follow this course.
