Doctor-bashing ill befits our hard-working GPs

From: Mrs I Asquith, Wakefield.

I TOTALLY disagree with the letter from Susan Dennis (Yorkshire Post, May 29). I have not met a GP who was not committed to his/her patients. They often go beyond what can be expected. I have yet to meet a full time General Practitioner who works the meagre hours mentioned.

The term “general” is a clue to their work. No-one, however long they train, can be expected to know everything about every condition. There are new treatments and drugs coming daily and after hours a GP is expected to read and learn about these. Sometimes self-help is needed.

I am nothing to do with medicine but have seen the hard work done by GPs and never not got an appointment when I needed one. It may not be with the GP of my choice but I have always been seen.

Everyone’s job looks easy from the outside – perhaps Ms Dennis should retrain for medicine.

From: David H Allen, Sicklinghall, Wetherby.

The letter from Susan Dennis is very misleading indeed and in
my view gives the wrong impression.

For the past 18 months or more, I have had very regular contact with my GP and other doctors over several conditions and make a very clear statement that I am fully satisfied with not only the kindness, but also the thoroughly professional manner they have dealt with me.

I find it hard to believe that any doctor in this area would attract critical comments.

Let us all support our doctors and stop all this unnecessary doctor-bashing.

We have a first class National Health Service in the UK, but like everything and everybody, it is not perfect.
