Face masks should now be compulsory in public to beat virus – Yorkshire Post Letters

From: Malcolm Smith, Scarcroft.

SO we are in lockdown again, but are we in it together?

As elderly and therefore vulnerable, my wife and I have become somewhat paranoid about going outside. We haven’t been into a supermarket since March and visiting relatives is a distant memory, but obviously keeping to the guidelines is for our own and their good.

Hearing that there were many who chose to ignore the guideline rules prior to this lockdown, could I suggest that, if this continues, a real hit to the pocket by a £1,000 fine be imposed for the first offence, ratcheting up later, and also that those caught be named and shamed in the local newspapers?

I don’t think that their more responsible parents, grandparents, other family members and friends will be pleased to see that they have become law-breaking criminals and potential disease spreaders, perhaps to them.

BORIS Johnson and his government are putting out a fire using buckets of water. That’s fine, at least it would be.

Unfortunately, their buckets are riddled with holes. They need to grasp the concept that to put the fire out, these buckets need repairing or you buy new ones.

As ridiculous as it may seem, there is probably a third to more than half the population not wearing a mask because they are exempt or flouting the rule. How is that going to affect the R number? We need to make the compulsory wearing of face covering for all – no exceptions.
