Give NHS staff medals as thanks for Covid service: Yorkshire Post Letters

Covid has presented a significant challenge to our way of life.

It would be appropriate to be able to give a lasting mark of appreciation for the enormous effort made by so many people within the NHS, who have worked tirelessly to treat and save the lives of patients.

The expressions of support and visits of Royalty and other key people are much appreciated now, but a lasting recognition might also be appropriate.

There are calls for NHS staff, carers and all those who have responded to the Covid pandemic to be awarded medals.There are calls for NHS staff, carers and all those who have responded to the Covid pandemic to be awarded medals.

The Ministry of Defence approve the issue of small campaign medals and ribbons for service personnel, so might it be possible for some modification to be made to 
this process so that a similar type of award, say a Covid medal, could be presented to NHS staff?

Similar awards were made to the Home Guard and certain Merchant Seamen in the 1939-45 war.

Such awards could be subject to a defined minimum period of service during this difficult time.

It would be a lifetime reminder of the nation’s lasting gratitude for the recipients and their families.
