WE visited Whitby for the first time after lockdown with some friends last week.

It was wonderful to see the North York Moors still covered in purple heather and to go to The Magpie, our favourite restaurant.

They were very well organised, giving you a time to eat, which was three-quarters of an hour.

The fish was superb as usual.

My friend and I had Seafood St Jacques, which is half a lobster, scallops and mussels with a white wine sauce with creamed potato.

The men had grilled woof and seafood pot, all delicious.

The thing that shocked us was no one seemed to be wearing face masks in the streets.

The resort was packed and the pub beer gardens crammed with people.

It made you feel quite vulnerable.

Having said that, it was wonderful to see everyone supporting the resort and spending lots of money.

The best thing was to feel “normal”, having spent so much time in isolation.

I think the things I have missed are the moors, the sea, The Magpie and, of course, people.

It was a lovely day and worth waiting for. We came home via Goathland, which was also extremely busy.
