I hope Donald Trump recovers and loses election – Yorkshire Post Letters

I WONDER how fellow readers are responding to the news that President Donald Trump has tested positive for Covid 19?

I confess that my initial reaction saw it as poetic justice upon a man who has perhaps had a greater negative impact on the desperate struggle against this awful pandemic than any other person on earth.

His wilful repeated ignorance over the disease, and his duplicitous responses, for example, to masks, were taking me in the uncomfortable direction of wishing him the same fate as over 200,000 of his fellow Americans, who had done far less to deserve theirs.

Yet, after a few minutes reflection, I can’t wish anybody such a fate. He will probably be loved by many of his friends and family and, one must accept, admired by millions of Americans, many of whom will now be praying for him.

For me it is crucial that his presidency does not come to a premature end, but that he recovers and is soundly beaten in the November election.

How we each respond to his condition does, I suggest, reveal a great deal about how we see the world and the dangers that threaten each of us.

I THOUGHT Sir Keir Starmer was clever and reasonable, but saying ‘if I were Boris Johnson I would apologise to the public’ shows he is neither. Using the worldwide pan-demic as a political weapon is dangerously stupid. Starmer should apologise to the public for pretending he knows better than anyone else how to deal with this extreme emergency.

JUST as Tony Blair will be remembered as the Prime Minister who acted on advice from a dodgy dossier, will Boris Johnson be remembered as the Prime Minister who acted on dodgy advice?

By all means guard those who are vulnerable and with health issues in this outbreak, but let the rest of us get back to normal, before the country and individuals drown under a sea of debt.
