Keep Whitby’s swing bridge open – Yorkshire Post Letters

From: Jean Thornton, Whitby.

I AM writing about proposals to shut down the old Whitby swing bridge. I think it is an absolutely crackers idea.

For a start off, people like to drive by the river on Church Street to see the lovely views by the river and so do we who live here. Also, visitors are very fascinated watching the function of the old bridge and how it works.

The closing down of this bridge to drivers of Whitby is a very unfair situation and it should not be done without having a public meeting first with people who live here and have to put up with all inconveniences (i.e. bridge closures) every single weekend.

It has made our lives much more stressful, we feel in double lockdown with the barriers up and the deadly virus.

It is the time the council thought more about the people who pay their way to live here and also think about how hard they are making this town for older people, money is not everything that matters. So please, council, let’s have a meeting and have our say before you get any more bright ideas.

THAnK you to The Yorkshire Post for your postcards of Yorkshire coastal gems this week – all have been sent to friends encouraging them to come here when Covid is over.
