Mine will not cause blight

From: Mrs M Hellawell, Cross Lane, Scarborough, North Yorkshire.

with reference to Martyn L Scargill’s letter (Yorkshire Post, July 2), has he seen the plans for the potash mine? I very much doubt it.

He is calling it ‘a crazy scheme’ but I think it is an excellent scheme. It will not impact on Whitby or the main tourist spots on the moors. It will have less impact than wind turbines and certainly will not cause a blight, as he predicts.

Why does it need a rail connection when the plan is to pipe the potash under ground all the way to Teesside, and most of the workings will also be underground?

Is Mr Scargill sounding off about something when he hasn’t bothered to enquire about the facts?

Act of treason

From: Brian Ormondroyd, Stanhope Court, Leeds.

The proposed sell-off of the Royal Mail is nothing less than an act of treason.

The Royal Mail goes back to 1516, the reign of Henry VIII. I am surprised that Prince Charles or even the Queen herself has not spoken out against this gross act of treachery.

The benefactors of the sale? The state-owned Deutsche Post? Russian racketeers? US freebooters? Dodgy hedge funds? Arab sheikhs?

A positive way forward. Bring TNT, City Link and the many other white van companies under the general control of our postal services.

One benefit being reducing the traffic on our roads and the pollution so caused.

Gongs oversight

From: Peter Hyde, Driffield.

Mr Cameron wants to have Andy Murray made a knight. I wonder why it is that when people are successful in sport or on TV and are in a position to make millions out of that success, the question is raised that they are worthy of knighthood?

There are many, many people, who have dedicated their lives to serving others, who are totally ignored by the honours system.
