Should reopening local rail routes be priority?

From: Canon Michael Storey, Healey Wood Road, Brighouse.

THESE HS2 and HS3 high-speed lines may well help people to get more quickly from one large town to another (Tom Richmond, The Yorkshire Post, October 27).

But surely, if we have all those millions of pounds to spend on transport, it would be better to re-open and build new stations on city-feeder lines?

To reduce traffic on the roads, serious consideration should be given to re-opening lines on track beds of many closed lines. One can remember the route from Harrogate to Leeds via Spofforth, Wetherby, Bardsey etc, the Otley link line, one Spen Valley Line from Huddersfeld to Leeds and another Spen Valley line from Huddersfield to Bradford.

I sometimes wonder if railway planners are really considering where best to spend their millions.

It has been announced that the Government has given its full backing to HS3 which will cut journey times between Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and Hull. This will cost £7bn as compared to the estimated £79bn for HS2 from London to Manchester. There are already good links from London to the North. HS3 will show a much better return for the money.
