When pedantry goes too far

From: Brian Sheridan, Redmires Road, Sheffield.

It is most unfortunate that H Marjorie Gill should quote from the distraught mother of a stillborn child to point out a grammatical error (The Yorkshire Post, November 20). I am sure the misjudgment was an accident: I am myself sometimes guilty of allowing solecisms to irritate me when I should be focusing on the content of a piece.

H MARJORIE Gill’s letter (The Yorkshire Post, November 20) is a solemn warning to us all to never tread the path of a pedant. Down that road lies a person so consumed by an urge to enforce iron rules of language they will breeze right past the grief of a mother in order to do so.
