AS I have said before in your letters page when John Sentamu retired, I am not a member of the Church of England, but had great regard for him as Archbishop of York (The Yorkshire Post, October 19 and 20).

He was an honest, plain speaking ‘‘adopted Yorkshireman’’ who greatly cared for all, high or low born mattered not to him. He ruffled feathers when they needed to be ruffled and spoke honestly in words we all could understand. I felt at the time that was the reason he did not become Archbishop of Canterbury. What wonderful forward thinking that would have been. To deny his elevation to the House of Lords was crass.

LEADERS of the Church of England love to interfere in matters secular, the latest being on Brexit, while totally ignoring serious problems within their own organisation. Church attendances throughout the land are in decline. Do they offer any constructive ideas on how to redress the situation? No. Yet they are only too keen to meddle in matters outside their remit.
