THE choice presented by Paul McGuinness on aviation and regional connectivity in his recent letter is a false one.

Heathrow’s new runway will need to meet strict targets on air quality, noise and carbon. Aviation must play its part in a greener economic recovery.

The industry knows that it can only survive if it drives the decarbonisation process – through meeting targets and developing at pace new sustainable fuels and aircraft.

Heathrow is the UK’s only hub airport and is more important than ever to a UK economic recovery and for creating the thousands of jobs, apprenticeships and business opportunities to help make a reality of a global, trading
Britain.

A national infrastructure project like this requires expertise from around the UK, which along with improved connectivity, will help create jobs across the North.

The project is expected to create up to 180,000 new jobs across the UK. Off-site construction centres will provide jobs for tens of thousands of people and ensure that firms in every part of the UK, including Yorkshire, can compete for contracts.
