Over 40s offered free health checks

PEOPLE aged over 40 in towns in the East Riding are being offered free health checks amid concerns serious conditions are going undetected.

The checks, which take about 30 minutes, are available for people in Bridlington, Withernsea or Goole, aged between 40 and 74, who have not already been diagnosed with heart disease, stroke, diabetes or kidney disease. The session includes tests for cholesterol and blood pressure and to ascertain the likelihood of developing conditions like diabetes.

Earlier this year, the Yorkshire Post revealed tens of thousands of people in the region were missing out on the free checks to identify people at risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney problems and diabetes which are blamed for one in five hospital admissions. Only 150,000 people in Yorkshire were offered the checks in 2011-12, half the number due to be targeted, with none receiving invitations in the East Riding or Sheffield.
