Pensioner dies after fire destroys home

AN investigation has began into the cause of a fatal house fire in West Yorkshire.

The blaze at 4am yesterday at Bawn Vale, Farnley, in Leeds, claimed the life of a pensioner, who lived alone. Later in the day, the elderly occupant had not been formerly identified.

Neighbours attempted to enter the property but were forced back by intense flames. The house was destroyed within minutes.

The house and adjoining property are now expected to be demolished after being deemed unsafe by council building officials.

West Yorkshire Police said they were conducting a joint investigation with fire officers into the cause. However, by late afternoon yesterday they had still been unable to enter the property.
