Body found in River Wharfe during search for man who went missing from Yorkshire village pub

Police searching for a man who went missing from a Yorkshire pub on Friday have found a body in the River Wharfe.

The body was found in the river at Bolton Abbey and police continued to search for Anthony Smith, who was last seen at the Red Lion in Burnsall at around 4.30am on Friday, July 19.

Police said he was not wearing any shoes when he went missing, and carried out extensive searches across the area before amember of public discovered the body on Wednesday (Jul 24).

A statement from North Yorkshire Police said: “Officers searching for missing person Anthony Smith have recovered a body from the River Wharfe at Bolton Abbey. The discovery was made by member of the public.

“Although formal identification is yet to take place, officers believe the body is of missing Essex man Anthony Smith. Anthony’s family have been informed of today’s news and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

“We are not currently treating the death as suspicious.”
