In its application the company stated that it was not planning to sell alcohol to be consumed on the premises.

It said: “We are only selling gift hampers predominantly made up of our baked goods, but with the addition of some beers, wines or spirits.”

The licence has now been granted following a public consultation.

Elizabeth Botham set up her bakery in the ancient fishing port of Whitby over 150 years ago.

It now has three locations in the town with bakeries in Skinner Street and Baxtergate alongside the Enterprise Way unit on the Whitby to Scarborough Road.
