Visitors packed the riverside in Knaresborough over the Bank Holiday weekend as Yorkshire enjoyed soaring temperatures during an unprecedented spell of late-spring heat.
People were pictured rowing boats along the River Nidd, paddleboarding beneath the town’s iconic viaduct and relaxing on the grass in the sunshine as temperatures climbed across the country. Others cooled off with ice creams while crowds gathered around the popular waterside areas.
The scenes came as the Met Office confirmed the UK had recorded its hottest May day on record, with temperatures provisionally reaching 35.1C in London. Health alerts remained in place across parts of England as the exceptional heat continued.
Forecasters said warmer conditions were expected to continue across Yorkshire for much of the week before temperatures gradually return closer to seasonal averages by the weekend.
