Listen to dramatic 999 conversation as call handler helps parents deliver baby

This video shows the dramatic conversation between a 999 call handler and the partner of a woman who was giving birth in the back seat of their car.

Humberside Police’s call handler Stef picked up a call on Thursday morning (Oct 29) from a man whose partner was in the midst of giving birth in the car on the way to the hospital.

Stef got the man to safely pull over into a pub car park and continuously reassured the new parents as the birth unfolded at pace.

At the same time, the call handler contacted ambulance and the nearest police officers to scramble to the couple to provide support and care.

In one heartwarming moment, Stef hears the baby crying as the dramatic situation unfolds.

A statement from Humberside Police said: “This is not a situation Stef, or indeed any of our call handlers, would normally have to deal with, and it certainly put Stef's training to the test.

“A baby girl arrived whilst she was still on the phone, so she made sure both baby and mum were safe and well until the paramedics arrived to take over.

“Not all calls into our force control room have a happy ending, but this one certainly did as a healthy baby girl was safely delivered, wrapped snuggly in a blanket, and transported to hospital with mum and dad in tow.”
