Father Ross Thompson who has died at 79, was a retired priest in North Yorkshire.

Born in Port Chalmers, New Zealand, he moved to England in 1966 and was ordained into the Church of England in 1969. He served in parishes in Portsmouth, London, Bath and Wells, Oxford and Rochester.

He moved his family to York in the early 1990s, and was received into the Catholic church during the Easter Vigil. After completing his diocesan studies at Ampleforth, he was ordained a priest at Our Lady’s, Acomb, in June 1996.

His first parish was St Wilfrid’s, York, as assistant priest, where he remained until 2001, until becoming administrator at St Anthony’s, Hull. He was later the parish priest at St Joseph’s, York, from where he retired in 2012.

He then became part of the supply clergy in York, celebrating Mass on Palm Sunday this year at St Joseph’s in the Bar Convent.

He married his late wife, Jill, in 1970 in Fareham, Hampshire, and they had a daughter, Aldyth, in 1974.
