Obituary: Ron Kershaw, journalist

Ron Kershaw, who has died at 92, was a former Northern Industrial Correspondent of The Yorkshire Post who went on to a career in Fleet Street, most notably with The Times.

Ron Kershaw, who has died at 92, was a former Northern Industrial Correspondent of The Yorkshire Post who went on to a career in Fleet Street, most notably with The Times.

A native of Wombwell, he followed Margaret Thatcher’s future press secretary and present-day columnist Bernard Ingham into the YP role, having previously worked on the South Yorkshire Times and the old Morning Telegraph in Sheffield.

The son of a Barnsley teacher, he began his career in 1949 after serving as a radio operator with the Royal Corps of Signals.

After a spell in London, he returned to Leeds as Northern Industrial Correspondent for The Times but in 1984 he was recruited by the Barnsley-based South Yorkshire County Council as its officer in charge of media.

When the council was abolished by his YP predecessor’s boss, he was taken on by the residual authority overseeing its running-down.

He went on to produce a newspaper for Barnsley Borough Council, before retiring in 1990.

His wife, Freda, died 13 years ago,
