The RSPCA were called to the beach at Ravenscar, between Scarborough and Whitby, this week to find the animal in distress.

Fishing twine was clearly visible around its muzzle and is thought to have been discarded tackle.

Two RSPCA officers removed the seal and it was taken to a vet, but the decision was made to euthanise it.

The charity warned anyone taking part in sea angling to clear up litter.

The seal's death comes just a week after three minke whales were found dead off the coast of Whitby with injuries consistent with becoming entangled in fishing wire and lobster pot chains.

One of the carcasses has since been washed ashore at Upgang Ravine and an autopsy will be conducted.
