Stepney Station: Former railway station up for heritage gong

A former railway station in a city centre is in the running for the prestigious National Railway Heritage Awards.

Stepney Station on Beverley Road, Hull, stands as one of the last surviving components of its suburban railway network.

Closed 60 years ago, it’s now a thriving community centre and has been shortlisted for the awards which recognise best practices in the re-use, restoration, and upkeep of railway and tramway heritage across the UK.

The station was one of half a dozen built in the early 1850s as part of the three-mile long Victoria Dock Branch Line, which connected the Hull and Hornsea Railway to the east and the York and North Midland Railway and Hull and Selby Railway to the west, terminating at Victoria Dock.

A grant from the National Heritage Lottery Fund paid for vital repairs to the building, which is now operated by the Summit Education Society.

It also saw the Grade II-listed Station House repainted in its traditional brown and buff colour scheme, offering a glimpse of how it looked in its Victorian heyday.

The winners will be announced during a ceremony at Merchant Taylors’ Hall, in London, on December 4.
