The Harrogate woman organising a doorstep sleigh bell ring on Christmas Eve

A Yorkshire woman is calling on people to spread good cheer at Christmas by ringing sleigh bells in unison.

Mary Beggs-Reid has suggested that people take to their doorstep at 6pm on Christmas Eve for a riotous round of festive fun.

It initially started out as an idea for people in her native Harrogate to make an "amazing memory for the kids and communities".

She wrote: "What started as a little idea for the Harrogate Community is starting to spread so [I] thought a group would be a good idea for all communities to join in.

"On Christmas Eve at 6pm we are asking everyone to come outside and ring a bell for two mins to spread Christmas spirit and to help Santa fly that sleigh. With the added option of set Carols to sing after!

"After a tough year it would be an amazing memory for the kids and communities. End 2020 with a bit of magic, hope and togetherness!"
