Yorkshire boy obsessed with Tesco goes viral after supermarket gave him huge surprise

A Yorkshire boy who is obsessed with Tesco has gone viral on social media - after the supermarket treated him to a huge surprise.

Bobby Churchill, from Newbald, loves his trips to the supermarket - which has become a beacon of "normality" during lockdown for his family.

When his dad Benjamin, 31, put a post on a local forum asking if anyone could make his son a Tesco t-shirt for his son's birthday, he didn't expect a big response.

However, Tesco staff from the Market Weighton store in East Yorkshire spotted his post and started to plan an amazing day for four-year-old Bobby.

He was given his own uniform and badge on Monday (Nov 23) and was even escorted to the store in an official Tesco van.

Bobby was then given training on the checkouts and ended the visit with a special gift - his own Tesco van and chocolates.

His dad Benjamin took to social media to share the amazing day his son had.

Benjamin's post said: "A few weeks back I put a post up on here asking if anyone could make a Tesco t shirt for my little ones birthday.

"Bobby is obsessed with Tesco, with Mummy and Daddy being extremely busy this year with work, I think it was his bit of normality when we popped to the supermarket together.

"I just want to say a massive THANK YOU to Lishka and the staff at Tesco Market Weighton for truly making a little boys day today!

"They had a uniform and badge made, brought in a Tesco.com van and had Bobby doing some checkout training on his first shift.

Both Benjamin and his wife Chantelle, 28, work shifts in the healthcare sector.

He said their trips to the supermarket have become "normality" for Bobby and he loves visiting - even requesting his birthday cake is made at his favourite shop.

Benjamin added: "He loves Tesco.

"I think it is because it has been his normality this year, popping to the supermarket with mummy and daddy.

"We are both working in the healthcare sector so have been extremely busy working shifts around each other, so on days off or between shifts we would pop to the shop for food and treats.

"For the past few months he always wants to pop in if we drive past, even requesting his birthday cake be from there.

"Since his visit he hasn't stopped talking about his new "job" at Tesco, I came in off shift this morning and instead of him being snuggled up to one of his teddies, he was snuggled asleep with his Tesco toy van they gave him yesterday.

"The staff, especially a lady called Lishka, were amazing with his visit, both Bobby's mum and I could not have asked for anything more."

Lishka Heaney, Checkout Services Manager At Tesco Market Weighton, said when she saw Benjamin's post, she knew she "had to do something for him".

She said he was a "natural" at the job.

Lishka added: “I pulled in a few favours and got him a covid secure trip to our Market Weighton store.

"He spent some time in one of our delivery vans and working on the checkouts.

"He was a natural and if he wants a job on the checkout when he’s a little bit older he knows where to come.

"We always want to make a positive impact in the communities we serve and I hope Bobby enjoyed his time here as much as I did.”
