PM blocked stop and search curb

Stop and search powers must be reformed, David Cameron has said amid claims that he is blocking plans to significantly curb the use of the controversial power.

Theresa May wanted to announce new limits before Christmas because she believed that the tactic, which gives officers wide-ranging powers to stop people they suspect of criminal intent, causes too much resentment of the police, according to The Times. But the overhaul reportedly provoked a stand-off between the Home Secretary and the Prime Minister, who is said to be concerned that it would leave the Conservatives open to claims that they were going soft on crime.

At Prime Minister’s questions, Mr Cameron said reforms are needed but Government would only legislate if “necessary”.
