Asked by the presenter would be able to carry out an execution, Mr Homewood said: “If the court determined he was worthy of the death sentence, yes I could do it.”

He added: “I orchestrated the execution of people in America and I didn’t lose any sleep over it.”

Mary Creagh, who is defending the Wakefield seat she has held for Labour since 2005, said: “This bizarre interview where the Tory agent in Wakefield boasts about helping out with a hanging is a chilling reminder that Theresa May’s Tories are and always have been the nasty party.

“His extraordinary revelations show why Wakefield’s Tory candidate is keeping such a low profile - his campaign manager is a 1950s throwback.”

Mr Calvert said: “The Labour candidate is desperately jumping on any bandwagon to deflect from the big issues of this election for which she has few, if any, answers. My agent is committed to getting a Conservative MP elected for Wakefield, who will stand up for people and represent their interests in Westminster.”
