West Yorkshire Police confirmed a complaint had been received regarding malicious communication towards a serving MP and investigations are ongoing.
The Yorkshire Post understands the MP in question is Bradford West’s Naz Shah
Labour MP Ms Shah has previously been the target of abuse and death threats, and won an apology and damages after she took legal action over comments which led to abuse
A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Police received a complaint in regard to malicious communications towards a serving MP and have promptly begun investigations. A number of arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.”
In February Prime Minister Boris Johnson launched a fresh probe into the abuse faced by MPs, but especially female politicians.
Mr Johnson told a meeting of the Conservative Women in Parliament group that there was “something really rancid going on” and he reportedly said: “We need to re-civilise our politics and society. It has become very rough and rancorous and it won’t get better unless we fight it.”
