A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Police received a complaint in regard to malicious communications towards a serving MP and have promptly begun investigations. A number of arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.”

In February Prime Minister Boris Johnson launched a fresh probe into the abuse faced by MPs, but especially female politicians.

Mr Johnson told a meeting of the Conservative Women in Parliament group that there was “something really rancid going on” and he reportedly said: “We need to re-civilise our politics and society. It has become very rough and rancorous and it won’t get better unless we fight it.”
