Ashcroft election poll shows Clegg challenge

NICK Clegg is ahead by just 3 per cent in his Sheffield Hallam seat, the latest election polling has revealed.

A survey by Conservative pollster Lord Ashcroft has found Labour gaining on the Liberal Democrat leader, who has a 15,284 majority.

The Ashcroft poll also should the vast majority of voters in Mr Clegg seat, 29 per cent thought David Cameron would make the best Prime Minister. with the deputy PM on just 11 per cent.

The poll also looked at Ed Miliband’s Doncaster North seat, where the Labour leader was 12 per cent ahead of Ukip with 40 per cent of the vote.

Elsewhere the Tory peer looked at Thanet South, where Ukip leader Nigel Farage is set to stand. The poll showed Ukip were on 29 per cent, behind the Conservatives on 34 per cent.

But, the pollster said, the survey did not name Nigel Farage or any other politicians as a candidate to voters.
