After being asked by veteran talk show host Larry King what British people get wrong about Americans, Bean said one major misconception centred around Mr Trump.

He said: “I don’t think British people can believe that this buffoon is a prospective American president.”

He then went on to discuss an online petition which attracted more than 100,000 signatories calling for Mr Trump to be banned from the UK.

During the 20-minute interview on King’s online series Larry King Now, Bean talked about his acting career in TV dramas such as Sharpe and Game of Thrones, and his film roles including Lord of the Rings - joking that his characters nearly always seem to get killed off.

Bean also spoke of his time working as a welder in a Sheffield steelworks, his love of climbing trees, and his “guilty pleasure” of chocolate eclairs.

He said if he wasn’t an actor he’d like to be a ‘painter, sculptor, or landscape gardener’.

When asked what Americans get wrong about Britain, Bean said: “They tend to think Britain is all a bit like Downton Abbey.”
