Doncaster Council staff get living wage

DONCASTER COuncil is to become the latest Yorkshire employer to pay the living wage.

The rate is set annually and is based on Joseph Rowntree Foundation research on the wage needed to support an adequate lifestyle.

The living wage, which employers volunteer to pay, is currently £7.65 an hour compared to the national minimum wage, which all employers must pay by law, of £6.50.

Labour-run Doncaster Council recently found itself caught in the cross-fire of Prime Minister’s Questions during an exchange on the living wage.

David Cameron used the authority’s failure to pay the living wage to deflect criticism from Labour leader Ed Miliband, a Doncaster MP, on the issue.
