Fireworks laws: Government urged to clamp down in consultation by MPs

West Yorkshire MPs have urged the Government to bring in tougher laws around fireworks as part of the consultation it is set to launch.

The PoliticsHome website has reported that it will look at whether to update the list of banned fireworks, review the requirements for the broad category of lower-risk fireworks to ensure and reduce the noise limit for consumer fireworks.

As part of its Safer Streets campaign, the Government is looking at the impact on people and pets.

Yorkshire MPs like Bradford West’s Judith Cummings have long campaigned for a reduction in the noise levels of pyrotechnics, and she said: “I am pleased that government is now looking seriously at this.”

“Most people enjoy fireworks responsibly, but people in Bradford know only too well the year-round blight of fireworks misuse caused by a thoughtless few.

“That is why after years of campaigning, it is fantastic to finally have a government that is listening and taking people’s concerns seriously.

“I will continue to push for action at the highest levels of government, and I will be encouraging my constituents and everyone across Bradford to make their views known when the consultation launches.”

Fellow West Yorkshire MP, Keighley and Ilkley’s Robbie Moore said: “We’ve seen the devastating effects of fireworks misuse across Keighley and the Bradford District.

“They disturb the peace of entire neighbourhoods, terrify pets, and leave vulnerable people trapped in their own homes throughout the year and late at night.”

Mr Moore, who has led calls for fireworks reform in Parliament as part of the Petitions Committee on behalf of nearly half a million people, welcomed the move but warned it must not become “a consultation for consultation’s sake”.

“That means looking seriously at measures such as reducing noise limits, restricting sales, and ensuring proper enforcement at the point of purchase.”

Leeds North West MP Katie White commented: “Fireworks are one of the number one issues people raise with me.

“From pet owners worried sick to residents dealing with anti-social behaviour. It’s clear we’ve lost the balance between fun and nuisance.

“Organised displays have a really important role in our communities, like the brilliant one organised in Yeadon but too many people are being driven to despair by repeated, unexpected noise outside of firework night.

“I’m really pleased this Government is taking action, and I’d encourage everyone in my constituency to have their say.”
