Labour strengthens hold

LABOUR strengthened its hold on Kirklees Council by winning the by-election for the vacant Liversedge and Gomersal seat.

Teacher Simon Alvy won the seat for Labour by a margin of just 159 votes over Sharon Light, wife of Conservative group leader Robert Light. The Liberal Democrats were third.

The election was called after Conservative councillor Margaret Bates resigned for health reasons in April.
