Exclusive:Mohsin Hussain: Keighley councillor with criminal past will not stand in local elections

The Bradford councillor who was recently suspended by the Labour Party over his violent criminal past will not be standing in next month’s local elections, The Yorkshire Post can reveal.

Sir Keir Starmer told Mr Moore he would “look into this straight away”, and within hours the party had suspended the Keighley Central councillor.

A Labour Party spokesperson later said: “These are serious allegations. The Labour Party takes all complaints seriously and they are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures."

It is understood that Coun Hussain remains suspended by Labour.

On 7 May, all Bradford councillors will be up for election following boundary changes.

Coun Hussain told The Yorkshire Post: “I have made the decision not to stand as an independent this year.

“I will allow the Labour Party to conclude its investigation and hopefully return next year.”

He was first elected in 2021, replacing his father, former Bradford mayor Abid Hussain, who died on Christmas Eve in 2020 of coronavirus.

He was given a 12-month sentence, suspended for two years, along with 200 hours of unpaid community work.

He said: “I made poor decisions in the past. It was in my teenage years when a mistake was made and I genuinely believe that everybody should obviously receive a second chance.

“I was quite happy that I did receive that second chance.”
